Reception Room With Bamboo Decking

Bamboo Decking Vs. Composite Flooring

When looking for options for your flooring, there are many options available to you. Many will often automatically go for the option of composite flooring using a form of hardwood, as is the norm for many across the world.

However, it would be wise to consider an increasingly popular option, bamboo decking.

Bamboo decking has many benefits that come with its installation, and these should definitely be considered. But why is it becoming so popular? And how does it match up against traditionally chosen composite flooring options?

Here is a comparison of bamboo decking and composite flooring.

Moisture absorption

A good composite flooring option will absorb very little moisture.

This is beneficial as too much moisture can lead to issues such as mould and structural integrity issues. The issue with moisture in wood is that it can cause the wood to expand, which can cause structural integrity issues as well as being not aesthetically pleasing.

A good composite flooring option will absorb very little moisture.

An example of this is timber, which will not absorb a lot of moisture.

Bamboo decking has similar moisture absorption properties to timber, and as a result will not absorb a lot of moisture.

Maintenance required

composite flooring maintenance

A high quality composite flooring option will require cleaning, just like any other flooring option. This can be done with simple and traditional cleaning methods such as soap or deck wash and polish. For this reason composite flooring options are generally easy to clean.

Bamboo decking, on the other hand, requires a cleaning method involving repetitive staining or oiling in order to be fully and properly cleaned.

Moreover, the surface becomes very slippery if there is any build-up of mould or mildew.

Because of this, composite flooring options are easier to clean and are less hazardous, as they are not as slippery when being cleaned.

Ease of installation

A good quality composite flooring option will typically use a concealed fastener system in its installation, which significantly reduces the normal installation time in contrast to traditional flooring installation methods.

On the other hand, bamboo decking installations have to be done using traditional flooring installation methods. Some have tried to use concealed fastener options in order to install it, however it has proven to be effective installation method in the long term.

For this reason, composite flooring options may be better suited to those looking for a shorter installation time.

Cost

A high quality composite flooring option will cost relatively the same as a bamboo decking option. In terms of labour costs, a composite flooring option will be installed at a much lower period of time. Furthermore, the maintenance of a composite flooring option will be much cheaper.

Environmental friendliness

Bamboo decking is definitely more environmentally friendly than composite flooring. Composite flooring options such as timber require wood to be cut from timberlands which have a regrowth period of 30-50 years.

With bamboo decking, the regrowth period is 3 years. This is significantly lower than the composite flooring option.

It is a more sustainable and excessively available material that can be harvested without much impact on the environment.

Furthermore, it generates more oxygen, making the overall surrounding environment healthier.

Composite flooring and bamboo decking both have their benefits and downfalls.

Bamboo decking initially takes longer to install than composite flooring, is harder to clean and costs more to maintain.

However, it is more environmentally friendly, and both absorb around the same amount of moisture.

It also has a beautiful look to it and a natural fragrance that will make your home seem very welcoming.

It is up to you which option would best fit your situation.
